Writing J in cursive

A cursive J is a bit difficult to master. A lowercase j in cursive is similar to a handwritten one, however there are a few more steps to writing a cursive one.

The letter J in cursive usually connects to the letter e in words like:

  • jersey
  • jester

Cursive j’s also connect to the letter u in many words. Some of these include:

  • justice
  • justified

After you become comfortable with writing the letter b in cursive, practice writing “je” together as well as “ju.” These letters join together and will help you understand how cursive works to form words.

Extra Practice: Try writing out our example words for practice with the entire alphabet, the the letter t and letter f.

Writing a Cursive Capital J

As you see in the diagram (above), begin the capital cursive J slightly above the bottom line. Bring your first stroke up to the top line, looping back around, making a stem back down below the bottom line.

Once below the bottom line, make a small loop coming back above the bottom line, taking your final stroke to the bottom right of the letter for connectors.

Now you can write a capital J in cursive!

Please watch our short tutorial video showing exactly how to write both upper and lowercase.

Writing a Lowercase j in Cursive

A lowercase cursive j is similar to a handwritten lowercase j. Begin your stroke slightly below the center line.

Bring your stroke to the center line, then take your stroke down, below the bottom line. With the same stroke, loop back up to the bottom line and create the small tail off the right of the letter for the connectors.
